2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Available Technology and Connectivity Features

Over the past 20 years, we’ve gone through many technological changes. We went from needing to carry a phone, camera, and MP3 player to carry one device. DVDs and VHS tapes have been replaced by streaming services. Even our vehicles have become more technological. One vehicle that has several modern technology features is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. What technology and connectivity features are available? Keep on reading to find out!

Highly Digital and Connected Experience

Breaking from tradition, the available Volkswagen Digital Cockpit displays important information on a high definition screen. Information includes speed, engine temperature, RPM, and mileage. This digital display can do more than provide you with information. The digital cockpit can store up to four driver profiles. Each profile will keep the driver’s preference for settings and systems. Additionally, you can choose to have navigation fill the entire screen for a better view. If you like to have a fun-filled drive, the available 8-inch touchscreen sound system gives you easy access to your music. Additional features include navigation, phone, traffic, and Travel Link™.

As many of us have smartphones, we know that it’s good to keep them ready to go no matter where we travel. The available wireless charging station helps keep any compatible device from losing battery. No matter where you go, you’ll always be charged and ready to go. To avoid using up your data plan, the Volkswagen Car-Net® Hotspot turns the Tiguan into a Wi-Fi hotspot that can support up to four devices. For a more connected experience, get the Volkswagen Car-Net® app to unlock more features like remote commands, Family Guardian Alerts, and Parking Info.

What is the Volkswagen DSG transmission?

The Volkswagen DSG® and How It Works

If you’ve owned a Volkswagen vehicle or are familiar with the auto manufacturer, you might have noticed the term DSG® when it comes to talking about transmissions. Automakers are sometimes known for using jargon and acronyms to describe features in their cars. Often times, it can seem like that kind of language is used to make things sound more impressive than they actually are. Is that the case with the Volkswagen DSG®?

Refreshingly, it’s not the case for the DSG®. It’s a simple and straightforward acronym that is used for efficiency. So…

What is the Volkswagen DSG® transmission?

What is the DSG®?

DSG® stands for Direktschaltgetriebe in German, which translates to English as “direct-shift gearbox.” The DSG® is a type of dual-clutch automated manual transmission. It works by assigning specific alternating gears to each clutch, allowing for quick, single-motion shifting. The first clutch handles Reverse, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th gears; the second clutch handles 2nd, 4th, and 6th gears.

Where a normal automatic or manual has to shift out of gear, navigate to the next gear, then shift into that gear, the DSG® can shift out of one gear straight into the next sequential one with one fluid motion. This reduces shift times substantially, as well as reducing wear and tear on the transmission. It will come as no surprise that this transmission type was originally developed for racing use. The original DSG® was a 6-speed; current DSG® transmissions are 7-speeds.

Does Volkswagen still use DSG®?

Yes, although sparingly. It is reserved mostly for performance variants of vehicles. Notable in-production (at the time of writing) vehicles with the DSG® are the 2019 Golf GTI, 2019 Golf R, 2019 Golf SportWagen, the 2019 Jetta GLI, and the 2020 Jetta GLI. Most vehicles in the current Volkswagen lineup use either an 8-speed traditional automatic transmission or the classic 6-speed manual transmission.

Does VW Car-Net include a remote start?

A woman remote starts her Volkswagen vehicle from the comfort of her ultra-modern living room.

The days of pushing buttons and turning keys may soon fade into oblivion. With smart home technology, many of us no longer have to flick a light switch or change the channel with a button; we just tell the thing to do the thing, and it does the thing.

While we may not yet be at the point where we can scream at our car to tell it to turn on (though we’re pretty close), technology at least allows us to start our engines from a remote locale. That’s right- we’re talking about the remote start. Does the Volkswagen Car-Net system include a remote start?

Volkswagen Car-Net Remote Start Functionality

A woman extends her finger to interact with the Volkswagen Car-Net interface on her smart phone.

Yes, Volkswagen Car-Net comes with Remote Access, which includes the ability to remotely start and stop a properly-equipped vehicle.  For the 2020 model year, Car-Net Remote Access is offered on most models for no additional charge for the span of five years since the date of the purchase.

Other features in Remote Access include remote door lock and unlock remote honking, and light flashing (think of all the fun you (or your small child) could have with that!), finding the last parked location, and remote vehicle status display. This last feature provides information on mileage, fuel level, and door/window status.

Volkswagen Debuts Next-Generation VW Car-Net for 2020

The latest iteration of Volkswagen Car-Net is being released with 2020 Volkswagen models, and its set to thoroughly impress. The next-generation Car-Net brings even more features and quicker response times. In further good news, it comes standard on most 2020 models, with Remote Access services included, at no charge for five years.

Even 4G LTE WiFi comes standard (with a data plan subscription), allowing users to enjoy Wi-Fi in their car. This just adds to the list of reasons we never care to leave our Volkswagen when we get home. Heck, perhaps starting in 2020, we never will.

What is included in Volkswagen Car-Net?

We like to think of Volkswagen Car-Net as the home base for all things Volkswagen connectivity. Volkswagen Car-Net offers four available packages including App-Connect, Guide and Inform, Security and Service, and e-Remote that allow drivers to tailor their connectivity experience to their lifestyle.

With Volkswagen Car-Net, features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, vehicle health reports, automatic accident notification, valet alerts, and remote services like turning on the air conditioning are all available at the touch of a button from your smartphone or vehicle dashboard.
